What to Expect

There are several common characteristics of people who successfully make the transition to hearing instruments.  Among the most important are a commitment to learn and a strong desire to keep practicing.

We encourage new users to start slowly.  Your ultimate goal should be to use your new hearing instruments all day, everyday.  This includes situations in quiet and noisy environments, as well as times when you think you may not need to wear them.

Along the way, you may have trouble recognizing certain sounds or speech.  This is normal and will gradually improve as you adapt to your new hearing instruments.  Re-learning to hear takes time and patience.  It is important not to give up.  Take a break if you become tired or frustrated, but keep practicing.  In time, it will become easier and more satisfying.  In most cases, part-time use of hearing instruments does not permit you to experience the best results.

Typically, you can expect some follow-up visits to your hearing center during the first week of use.  This is normal and allows us to make any adjustments, check your progress and answer your questions.  Just like any other medical procedure, you can expect to go through a period of rehabilitation, followed by adjustment to your new circumstances, and this will take patience and persistence.
